STANDARD RECONSTITUTION INSTRUCTIONS FOR PEPTIDES
WARNING: Not all peptide mixtures are the same. Be sure to read more about your unique peptide and do your own research to ensure safety.
Since peptides are usually supplied as a fragile, freeze-dried powder, they must be mixed with a sterile liquid, known as the solvent, before injection.
Step-by-Step Guide to Reconstitution
The solvent used for peptides is almost always Bacteriostatic Water (BAC Water), which is sterile water containing a preservative (usually 0.9% benzyl alcohol) to inhibit bacterial growth.
I. Preparation
- Wash Hands: Thoroughly wash your hands with soap and water.
- Clean Surface: Work on a clean, sterile surface.
- Sanitize Vials: Use an alcohol swab to vigorously wipe the rubber stopper (cap) of both the BAC Water vial and the peptide powder vial. Allow the tops to air-dry completely.
II. Drawing the BAC Water
- Draw Air: Using your mixing syringe (e.g., a 5 mL / 100 unit insulin syringe), draw air into the syringe equal to the volume of BAC Water you plan to add.
- Equalize Pressure: Insert the syringe into the BAC Water vial and push the air in. This equalizes the pressure and makes drawing the water easier.
- Draw Water: Flip the BAC Water vial upside down and carefully draw the desired volume of BAC Water into the syringe.
III. Injecting the Water into the Peptide
- Insert Needle: Insert the needle of the syringe into the rubber stopper of the peptide powder vial.
- Inject Slowly: Crucially, aim the tip of the needle toward the side of the glass vial. Slowly and gently push the plunger to release the BAC Water, allowing it to run down the side of the glass. Do not inject the water directly onto the powder. This avoids damaging the peptide structure.
- Remove Needle: Once the water is fully transferred, remove the syringe and safely recap or discard the needle (in a sharps container).
IV. Dissolving the Peptide
- Swirl, Don't Shake: DO NOT SHAKE the vial vigorously, as this can degrade the delicate peptide.
- Dissolve: Gently swirl the vial or roll it between your hands for a few minutes.
- Wait: Set the vial aside and let it sit for 10–15 minutes at room temperature. The powder should fully dissolve, leaving a clear, homogeneous solution with no visible particles. If undissolved powder remains, swirl gently again.
V. Storage
- Label: Affix a label with the date of reconstitution.
- Refrigerate: Store the reconstituted peptide solution immediately in the refrigerator (do not freeze).
